The Shackled City of Chult
Orenillus Cathais hails originally from the Moon Elves enclave, where he spent the first 200 years of his life studying Arcane mysteries and battlefield tactics. At age 201 he joined the entourage of the elven ambassador to Waterdeep as a specialist attaché in Spellcraft and Arcana. A decade in politics taught him that he did not have the people skills for diplomacy advancement, whereupon he joined the Army of Amn and served as a distinguished Battlemage and Exorcist for 50 years. During this time he gained renown as a tough tactical analyst and godsend to troops in the field. His penchant for chess and tide turning saboteur/protection spells gained him the nickname “Rook.”
Retiring from the Army at age 264 he has spent the last several decades as a military consultant, freelance demon hunter and defensive installation aficionado. He enjoys the company of bulwarks and crenellations far more than that of people, particularly short lived races, whom he finds to be irrational and short-sighted. His words are spent largely on his armadillo familiar, Gorthrim, who is named with the Elven word for The Dead in tribute to the many soldiers he has seen fall during his tenure as an officer. Although he is not a friendly person, he possesses a deeply ingrained sense of duty to his comrades in arms, and will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of his allies and the destruction of his foes.
During the past year he has watched the events unfolding in his old haunts and organizations and has come to the conclusion that he must contribute in a larger way to the solution. Drawn initially to the conflict on the plains of Amn and the presence of devils in the world, he has since decided that often the most effective way into a fortress is under the postern gate at midnight. Consequently he has come to Cauldron chasing rumors of an up and coming band of adventurers who have been making a name for themselves in the area. Hoping to assist this corps of individuals in their quests, The Rook plans to convince them to help restore order in the land.
